gOS Cloud

The new Cloud OS product, which was announced today at the Netbook World Summit in Paris, France, is specifically designed for netbooks and nettop computers. Cloud boots “in seconds” into a browser that is specifically designed to make access to cloud based applications, like Google’s suite of web apps, quick and easy via a built-in Mac OS X-like dock that has been added to the browser. Notice that the browser looks a lot like Google Chrome, which is open source. That seems unlikely to be a coincidence.

System migration

As of today, this site is running on dotclear. I migrated all the content and dug up some old ones from the Wayback Archive. Compared to Snews, dotclear is a more flexible and modern system, with a lot more advanced features. See the feature list. Also, don't get fooled by the name, it does run on/with LAMP.

Down below, inside the footer (the black part), I added my Flickr and Twitter stream. And of course, the RSS feed has changed, although I will add a redirection rule in the htaccess, it might be a good idea to update it in your feed reader: feed/rss2

If you encounter issues with this new engine, let me know in the comments.

All-In-One-Apparatus

We got ourselves a HP Photosmart C4580 All-in-One apparatus yesterday.

One thing I do wonder about is, if the print/scan/copy activites are send to HP and/or random other curious party. Something like the tracking dots on color laser printers, but this time over the network. Maybe I should get a sniffer on this.

On the other hand, all functionalities seems to be working on both WinXP (after some misery, apparently HP Director, which is installed by default, is replaced by HP Solution Center. Odd that Director is still included in the installation package) and Ubuntu. I installed HPLIP on Ub, and after configuring the C4580 on the network, it was easy to get the C4580 to work.

So, both XP and Ub are equally served, which is nice for a change

Welcome ASCII on Arch

I am using this as a welcome message on my Arch box. Perhaps a bit silly, but still... :-)

After reading this article I thought it would be fun to get the dust off the 2002 Toshiba Satellite 1800-214 I had lying around in the basement, and get it up and running again. Not for netbook purposes, 'cause the battery lasts, euhrm, about 10 minutes. But it might be a nice machine for some testing and fiddling around.

Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex

The upgrade to Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex on my HP Compaq nx7400 laptop is completed successfully
(= at first glance, everything seems to be working properly).

So, after a sturdy but long-legged, long-necked, long-billed bird (hardy heron), the Ubuntu Zoo got a new four legged inhabitant:

in·trep·id [in-trep-id]
–adjective
resolutely fearless; dauntless: an intrepid explorer.
i·bex [ahy-beks]
–noun, plural i·bex·es, ib·i·ces [ib-uh-seez], [ahy-buh-], (especially collectively) i·bex.
any of several wild goats of the genus Capra, inhabiting mountainous regions of Eurasia and North Africa, having long, recurved horns.

Solid gold Kate Moss sculpture

The sculpture is really about whether we make images or they make us. It’s about trying to live up to impossible dreams and immortality … For Kate, she thinks it lifts into her into a mythical level. I think she very much loved it because she understands the difference between her image and her self.
