Sometimes you need to query for not installed software on workstations. In SCCM, you have to use a sub select query for this. In this case we wanted all workstations without .NET 3.5 SP1.

Juniper Java Secure Application Manager on Mac OSX 10.6

If you have to use the Juniper Java Secure Application Manager and you happen to work on Mac OSX 10.6, there are two issues to overcome: you need JRE 1.5 for the JSAM to work and you need to operate Safari in 32-bit mode.

The JRE 1.5 issue

Since OSX has JRE 1.6 installed by default and there is no official way (at least, I couldn't find it) to install a lower version alongside with it, you have to walk outside the beaten path a little bit so to speak.

I knew it was not a hard thing to fix, since I did this for one of our clients last year but failed to write down the steps. So, I did some searching and found this thread on the Apple Support forums: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2133724&start=0&tstart=0 and from there this: http://wiki.oneswarm.org/index.php/OS_X_10.6_Snow_Leopard

Let me sum it up (it's a copy & paste from the Oneswarm wiki, all credits go to them):
→ Get the java 5 that was included in 10.5 "leopard" and unpack.
tar -xvzf java.1.5.0-leopard.tar.gz

→ Move it to your System java folder
sudo mv 1.5.0 /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.5.0-leopard

→  Tell OS X that java 5 actually is java 5
cd /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/
sudo rm 1.5.0
sudo ln -s 1.5.0-leopard 1.5.0
sudo rm 1.5 sudo ln -s 1.5.0 1.5

→ Open Java Preferences and change the properties to use Java 5 32-bit by default:

Operate Safari in 32-bit mode

This seems to be necessary for the Juniper client to work. Highlight Safari in Applications and hit - i. Check the box that says "Open in 32-bit mode".

Restart Safari and you should be able to use the Juniper Java Secure Application Manager.

It has happened, I bought an iMac 27". What can I say? It's shiny, hardware feels solid and it seems to be working out of the box.

Since I needed a hardware replacement for my HP dc7100, which ran buggy with a lot of freezes. I wanted solid hardware, even on the outside (I mean, most hardware in the shops doesn't feel all that solid and I am often afraid to break something off).

So I glanced at the 27" iMac and figured, why not?

A hundred years ago, the organizers of the Tour de France took riders high into mountains for the very first time. And, from there, the mystique of the Tour de France grew and grew. To commemorate this occasion, a group of modern day riders retraced the same route through the Pyrenees, which includes some legendary climbs: the Col de Peyresourde, the Col d'Aspin, the Col du Tourmalet, the Col du Soulor, etc. The weather conditions are slightly tough for these riders, but their bikes are light and modern, and the gearing much more forgiving than what their forebears had. Meanwhile the film documenting their ride is a pleasure to watch. The runtime is about 15 minutes.
